There is, dear reader, a certain electricity in the village air. One detects it in the lengthening evenings, in the hopeful glances toward the square, and in the unmistakable feeling that the cricket bag, having slumbered all winter in a state of noble neglect, may soon be called into active service.
Yes — the first ModburyCC fixture of the year is now less than a fortnight away.
Soon the pads will be buckled, the teas admired, and various members of the club will once again persuade themselves that this season, unlike all previous seasons, will be the one in which catches stick, drives pierce the covers like tracer fire, and no one pulls a hamstring during a gentle jog to fine leg.
Excitement is building nicely. The bats are being dusted off. And somewhere, no doubt, a man is already explaining that he’s “feeling good with the ball this year,” which history suggests should alarm us all.
Not long now, then. Cricket is nearly back — and Modbury shall be ready.
