Modbury kicked off  the cricket season with a competitive game against local rivals Ermington!

Modbury won the toss and chose to bat. Modbury’s settled opening pair of James Sloman (Slapps ) and Guy Speed strode out to the crease with purpose.

A watchful start the Modbury pair ended when Sloman was adjudged to be out lbw playing across the line. Guy played some very nice shots and wasn’t fully rewarded for his shot on a slow outfield and was unlucky to go skying one which bounced a fair bit more.

With the fall of the first wicket debutant Fred ford came out to the crease. From ball one he looked under control and it was no surprise when he retired on 25 with the score around 30 in the 8th over

New Modbury captain John Compston had a shaky start for his captaincy. He was bowled trying to defend a ball which came in – probably  should have just got on with it.

Coming in at 5 was another debutant and Modbury man Lee Merchant.  He was  joined by Tom hatch when  Compston was bowled and Tom decided not to hang around and middled one straight to mid off – unlucky

After this flurry of wickets Lee and James crudge-  batting higher up the order than normal stabilised things and shared a decent partership.

The Ermington bowlers were very accurate and on a difficult pitch these two had to dig in!

Ex captain Mark came In at 8 and added some useful lower order runs with the tail. Fred then who had carried  the bat came back in and added a few more runs finishing not out with Ange!

At the half way point Modbury felt they were about 30 short but did have 71 on the board and felt we would need a very good start to defend a light total.

Tom hatch opened the bowling and as  usual bowled “on the stumps 😂” and was difficult to get away going at an economy of 3 Just below the required rate

Compston opened the bowling from the other end and was more expensive but did manage to get one wicket a ball which kept low trapping the batsmen lbw

Having batted solidly Lee merchant came on to at first change and once he found his length looked dangerous. He was rewarded with a wicket late on

Modbury were always up against it setting a below par total but kept plugging away.

Special mention to slippery slaps James sloman bowling from his end, he kept Modbury in the game with some very tight  bowling finishing with figures of 4 overs 1 Maiden no wickets for 7 runs- he defiantly deserved a wicket.

Ermington batted patiently and knocked off the runs in the 18th over a competitive   game but a fairly comfortable victory for Ermington.

This was a decent performance from Modders.. lots to work on  with a special mention to Fred for his batting ( and bowling) and to James for a great spell.

We look forward to our next game at Harberton away, new opponents and a strong side. Hopefully we can post a more competitive total in the next game!
